The mosque is an important place of community congregation during Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. Muslims consider Ramadan to be the most blessed month; the Qur'an states that it was during this period that the Prophet Muhammad received the first Divine Message, which occurred about 610 CE. As Muslims are encouraged to perform extra devotional activities during Ramadan, mosques are filled with people attending special night prayers, known as tarawih, and recitations of the Qur'an.
