Dr. Kandiah, who was born in Sri Lanka, has a BA from the University of Ceylon and a PhD from the University of London. His main interests include sociolinguistics, especially new varieties of English, language planning, and cross-cultural communication; the interface of language, culture, and ideology in postcolonial contexts; linguistic and methodological aspects of teaching English as a second language (TESL); and the new literatures in English, particularly those from Singapore and Sri Lanka.
He has published articles in Journal of Linguistics, Language Learning, Navasilu, Journal of South Asian Literature, Multilingua, English World Wide,International Journal of the Sociology of Language, Papers in Linguistics, among others. He has also contributed chapters to various books including English Around the World: Sociolinguistic Perspectivess (ed. J. Cheshire), Perceiving Other Worlds (ed. E. Thumboo), and Honouring EFC Ludowyk (ed. P. Colin-Thomé and A. Halpé).
