Us Beasts

Grace Chia

Mother told me to be kind to animals
You beast
whether like you, they are
two-legged
three-legged
or on all fours

Mother told me to be kind to animals
You goat
with those horns like a satyr
You root, grovel and sniff
wet underpants;
big marble eyes with a glassy stare
and drool running down your mouth like wine
bad wine with a bad cork

Mother told me to be kind to animals
You boar
tough and rough as pork
the lovely snout you possess is elegant enough
only for fodder, fit for
King Pig
careful your brain doesn't turn mush

Mother told me to be kind to animals
You cur
servile subservient servant
do as I bid for a bite or two;
which? Left, right or down under?
You choose
or play catch with your own stick if you lose

Mother told me to be kind to animals
You weasel
thief, sleaze, buck-teeth rodent
scampering around on nasty claws
a sharp snuff and slit-eyes;
are you searching for my slit-eyes too?

Mother told me to be kind to animals
You lizard
reptilian cold-blooded monster
slimy and grimy, oh blimey!
always ogling with those cock-eyes of yours
and a lascivious fork-tongue
good only for eating flies;
-- Your fly too, if you are, THAT good)

Mother told me to be kind to animals
You brute
as Mother Plath makes me remember;
rude brute with the soot boot
busting bubbles
My bubble Our bubble Mother's bubble
bubble in the tum when the monthly red bubble comes

brute
I'd rather be Moses and cut an ocean of crimson all over you
You kill me when you don't kill my Babies

so be my savage
and bring me your tongs
heat up those hot coals
and place them in the oven to bake bread --
soon the yeast will rise
soon the eggs in the pan will fry
the milk in the jar turns warm
the legs and breasts roasted

savage
bring me syrup
I will be kind to you
my dear creature
and share this meal
sweet and sticky

and maybe
You and I can eat each other afterwards

beast to beast
goat to goat
boar to boar
cur to cur
weasel to weasel
lizard to lizard
brute to brute

as savagely as savagery does

Us
on all fours
