Georgette Chen explained the origin of her unusual name in her introduction to the 1966 woodcut exhibition organised by her colleagues from NAFA. She tells how her Malay artist friends tried to find her a name in Malay with the syllable "Chen" in it. Although many beautiful names were offered to her, them was none that she could feel at home with until the name Chendana (sandalwood) was suggested.
